In mid February, US Marines stormed the beach head of Iwo Jima. Fierce Japanese resistance limited the US advance to only 700 yards in 3 days.
It was one of the fiercest battles in the Pacific. Almost 110,000 US soldiers contributed in the attack. The Japanese had only 25,000 soldiers, but nearly every one of them fought to the death. The conquering of the island took US Marines nearly a month. Out of the 25,000 Japanese soldiers, only 216 had surrendered. The US death toll was about 26,000.
